To belong to any of them, first, candidates must already have earned the three degrees of Masonry. From there, they have the option to join as many of these organizations as they like. (Several appendant bodies include\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/californiafreemason.org\/2019\/04\/20\/of-their-own-freewill-and-accord\/\">women<\/a> who have a Masonic connection.)<\/p><p>Some Freemasons join several such groups because they discover it\u2019s a way to go deeper into an aspect of the fraternity that interests them. Other members prefer to focus their attention on their original <a href=\"https:\/\/freemason.org\/what-is-freemasonry\/#slide-806137f\">blue (or \u201ccraft\u201d) lodge<\/a>. It\u2019s personal to the individual.<\/p><p>Here are some of the best known Masonic appendant bodies in the U.S., from the Scottish Rite and York Rite to the Eastern Star:<\/p><ul><li><strong>Scottish Rite:<\/strong> If you\u2019ve heard of a 33<sup>rd<\/sup> degree Mason, you\u2019ve heard of the Scottish Rite. The organization \u2013 which <a href=\"https:\/\/scottishrite.org\/scottish-rite-myths-and-facts\/where-did-scottish-rite-begin\/\">didn\u2019t actually originate in Scotland<\/a> \u2013 offers \u201chigh degrees\u201d that expand and elaborate upon the lessons of Masonry\u2019s first three degrees. The group gained pop culture fame with Dan Brown\u2019s novel (and now, streaming series) <a href=\"https:\/\/californiafreemason.org\/2021\/10\/28\/a-new-show-bringing-freemasonry-into-prime-time\/\"><em>The Lost Symbol<\/em><\/a>. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scottishrite.org\/\">Learn more.<\/a>\u00a0<\/li><li><strong>York Rite:<\/strong> The order, which is most popular in the United States, is comprised of three bodies: the Royal Arch Chapter, the Royal and Select Master Council, and the Knights Templar\u00a0Commandery, which is based on the story of the Knights Templar <a href=\"https:\/\/www.history.com\/topics\/middle-ages\/the-knights-templar\">medieval warriors<\/a>. (Yes, the same Knights Templar sensationalized in Dan Brown\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.com\/culture\/article\/160512-friday-13-knights-templar-superstition\"><em>The Da Vinci Code<\/em><\/a>.) <a href=\"http:\/\/www.yorkrite.org\/\">Learn more<\/a>.<\/li><li><strong>Shriners International<\/strong><strong>: <\/strong>Ever enjoyed the Shriners\u2019 red fezzes and tiny-car antics in your local parades, or known a child who received care from a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shrinerschildrens.org\/en\">Shriners children\u2019s hospital<\/a>? The Shrine is a Masonic social group with a reputation for fun, and a legacy of high-profile charity work. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shrinersinternational.org\/en\/who-we-are\">Learn more<\/a>.<\/li><li><strong>Order of the Eastern Star (OES):<\/strong> OES was the <a href=\"https:\/\/californiafreemason.org\/2019\/04\/20\/a-voice-during-the-womens-movement-the-order-of-the-eastern-star\/\">first membership organization in the U.S. that gave women a voice on a national scale<\/a>. International<\/strong><\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gorainbow.org\/\"><strong>The<\/strong> <strong>International Order of the Rainbow for Girls<\/strong><\/a><\/li><\/ul><p>These youth orders remain an important way for young people to get involved in their communities while developing leadership and teamwork skills. Today, the Grand Lodge of Iran in Exile is headquartered in Los Angeles and has lodges in many U.S. states.<\/li><li><a href=\"http:\/\/wglca.org\/\"><strong>Women\u2019s Grand Lodge of California<\/strong><\/a><strong>: <\/strong>With three lodges in Los Angeles, this women\u2019s Masonic group is connected to the United Women\u2019s Grand Lodge Alma Mexicana.<\/li><li><a href=\"http:\/\/godf-amerique.org\/\"><strong>Grand Orient de France<\/strong><\/a><strong>: <\/strong>The largest of several French Masonic bodies, the Grand Orient includes two California lodges:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.godf-amerique.org\/godf-art-et-lumiere-los-angeles\">Art et Lumi\u00e8re<\/a>in Los Angeles and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.godf-amerique.org\/pacifica\">Pacifica Lodge<\/a>\u00a0in San Francisco.
